Why waste your time? …….If you’re going to study then these are strategies that work.
What does ‘work’ mean? ……..It means you’ll learn things. If you’re not sure what ‘learning’ actually means check out How Do We Learn.
Why is that important?
The more you know the easier it is to learn new things.
You can find out what NOT to do here.
| What | What to do, and why it works |
|---|---|
| 🧠 Retrieval Practice | Actively recall information from memory (e.g., self-quizzing, writing what you remember). It works best when spaced out and repeated over time. This strengthens memory traces and reveals what you don’t know. |
| 📅 Spaced Practice | Spread study sessions over days or weeks instead of cramming. Let yourself forget so retrieval is more effortful—and more effective. This builds long-term retention making new learning easier. |
| 🔀 Interleaving | Mix different topics or problem types during study. This helps you to distinguish between concepts and apply the right strategy. Helps you to see the bigger picture, and make meaningful connections. |
| 🧩Elaboration | Ask “how” and “why” questions to deepen your understanding. Connect new ideas to prior knowledge or real-life examples, “so that’s like…”. This makes meaningful connections, builds your understanding of what you understand. |
| 🖼️ Dual Coding | Combine verbal and visual representations (e.g., diagrams + text). Works well with concept maps, timelines, and annotated visuals. This doubles up the input (they’re parallel channels for taking information in) for better understanding. |
